Lizz earned her Honours Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Human Resources in 2023. “I would say that it is totally normal to be unsure about next steps. I used to think that studying psychology meant that I should become a therapist or psychologist, but this program is very transferable to other industries and disciplines. In my opinion, it is ok to try out different positions until somethings fits.”
Brief description of what I do!
I work in the Compliance Department of an insurance brokerage based in Montreal. I ensure brokers from all over Canada adhere to the council regulations of each province/territory, advise on provincial changes, and support day-to-day operations within the department.
What inspired your career path after graduation?
I found this position through trial and error. I’ve worked in many different industries in many different positions, slowly learning what I did and didn’t like. I discovered that I enjoy organizing information, playing a supporting role within a company, and understanding rules. Ultimately, a Compliance rule was a great fit.
How did your experience in the psychology program shape your journey?
The psychology program helped prepared me for a professional career and helped me meet a lot of great friends along the way.
What skills or experiences were most valuable after graduation?
Even though I don’t work within the field of psychology, the program taught me many skills that allowed me to be compatible with my current industry. Taking statistics and learning statistical software helped me to become comfortable with the Microsoft Suite (very important to know). As well, having to read and interpret large amounts of information via textbooks and essays, showed me how to understand formal writing, quickly digest regulatory content, and communicate complex ideas with confidence.
Do you have a favourite memory from your program at Carleton?
Every course offered by Cheryl Harasymchuk and Chris Motz were amazing!
What has been a highlight or proud moment in your career so far?
I’m proud of myself for leaving positions that weren’t a great fit, in order to find one that does!
