We are pleased to share that SPPA Professor Mehdi Ammi, in collaboration with Farzaneh Davarzani, has published a new article: “Econometric analysis of the long-run relationship between preventive care spending and mortality: Evidence from OECD countries, 1970–2019.”

Drawing on nearly five decades of data from 37 OECD countries, this study applies advanced econometric methods to examine how public spending on preventive care relates to mortality and life expectancy.

Key findings:
– Preventive care spending is associated with a long-run reduction in mortality (elasticity of −0.10).
– Positive effects are particularly linked to early disease detection and immunization programs.
– Compared with inpatient and outpatient expenditures, preventive care demonstrates a more consistent long-run impact on population health.

The results highlight the value of sustained investment in prevention as part of public health policy.
