Professor Mehdi Ammi’s New Publication
The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly disrupted cancer care worldwide, placing immense strain on healthcare systems and those working within them.
A new study co-authored by SPPA Professor Medhi Ammi, along with Arija Birze, Danielle Jacobson, Liz Mansfield, Lauren Cadel, Michelle Marcinow, Walter P. Wodchis, and Kerry Kuluski, explores the moral challenges and potential trauma experienced by healthcare workers in two Ontario hospitals.
Drawing on interviews and focus groups with 32 participants, the research identifies how healthcare providers were affected by:
1. Participating in perceived patient harms through delays and cancellations in care.
2. Bearing witness to patients navigating care alone.
3. Experiencing collective trauma with patients, families, and colleagues.
4. Feeling unsupported, unheard, or undervalued by leadership.
This work contributes to the growing discussion on moral distress and injury among healthcare workers. It highlights the need for systems-level approaches, including the concept of organizational sanctuary, to provide safer, more supportive working environments.
