Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers about eligibility, progression, internships, applications, and support.

Eligibility

Who Can Participate?

Who can participate in Nicol Interns & Ventures?

Any Carleton University student in good standing, regardless of faculty, degree level, or venture type. You must have at least 2 terms remaining before graduation to be eligible for the paid internship.

Do I need a fully formed business idea to join?

No. You only need an early-stage venture idea you want to explore. No validation, customers, or testing is required at the entry stage. Openness and curiosity are the entry conditions.

Do I need technical skills or a business background?

No specific technical or business background is required. Students from all disciplines can participate. Many opportunity areas focus on identifying problems and testing solutions, not building complex technology.

What are the entry requirements?

Three things: be a Carleton student in good standing with at least 2 terms remaining, have an early-stage venture idea you want to explore, and acknowledge the terms of participation. This confirms eligibility and shared expectations, not venture quality.

Can graduate students or international students participate?

Yes. The program is open to all faculties, all degree levels, and all venture types. If you are a Carleton student in good standing, you are eligible.

Progression

How the Program Works

Is this a startup accelerator or incubator?

No. It is a disciplined, evidence-based pathway where progression is earned through demonstrated customer-validated outcomes. It is not a pitch competition, accelerator, or incubator for fully formed companies.

How does progression work?

You progress through four states: Self-Directed Learner, Internship Applicant, Nicol Intern, and Early Growth Venture. Each transition requires evidence that meets clearly defined markers. Advancement is self-directed and based on real customer interactions, not time spent or content consumed.

Can I work at my own pace?

Yes. Progress is paced by your activity, not milestones set by the program. You move forward when you produce the required evidence, whether that takes weeks or months.

Does this count toward my degree or coursework?

No. The program is not a substitute for coursework or academic programs. It is a complementary pathway for students who want to explore building real ventures alongside their studies.

What evidence is required at each marker?

01

Readiness Marker

A clear problem for a specific customer, a promise of value, proof customers agree the problem matters, proof your idea is different, and a 30–90 day plan.

02

New Venture Marker

Customers act on the problem, customers act on your solution, at least one clear success is achieved, and something real is being used by customers.

03

Early Growth Marker

Customers pay or commit, success occurs more than once, and evidence shows readiness to grow with a plan grounded in results.

“The goal has always been to give students a real path to building something meaningful — not through lectures, but through disciplined action and evidence.”

How much does the internship pay?

$8,000 total — $4,000 per term for 2 consecutive terms. Funded by the Wesley M. Nicol Foundation and the Catalyst Fund. To be eligible, your venture must have an early-stage product or service prototype ready for market testing.

Is the internship guaranteed if I join the program?

No. Internships are an outcome of demonstrated readiness, not the starting point. You must progress through the pathway and produce evidence at each marker. There is no guarantee of funding, internships, or venture success.

Who funds the program?

The Wesley M. Nicol Foundation and the Catalyst Fund, supporting student entrepreneurs across all Carleton faculties through the Sprott School of Business TIM Program.

How will the funding be used?

You must have a specific plan showing how the $8,000 will advance your company goals. Your application includes a written response on designated use of funds, and you commit to reporting on how the funds were spent.

Application

Applying for the Internship

What do I need to apply?

Personal information (name, faculty, student ID, Carleton email), business information (if incorporated), three written responses of 200–300 words each covering your business description, challenges and opportunities, and designated use of funds, plus 3–5 concrete expected deliverables.

What makes a strong application?

Evidence of customer validation, a clearly defined problem, and deliverables that are specific, measurable, and time-bound. Reviewers evaluate the quality of your evidence and how you applied resources, not polished presentations or pitch decks.

What happens after I submit?

You present your venture evidence to the application review team. They assess your progress, ask questions, and may provide recommendations. The review focuses on whether you have demonstrated readiness to advance to the Nicol Intern state.

Is there a deadline to apply?

Contact the program team for current application timelines and access details. The application form is available through the Pathway page.

Do I need to be incorporated to apply?

No. The application asks for business information if applicable, but incorporation is not a requirement. What matters is evidence of a real problem, a tested solution, and a plan for market testing.

Readiness & Support

Getting Started & Getting Help

What if I’m not ready to apply yet?

That is completely expected. Most students begin by accessing curated learning resources on Brightspace. Start there, work through the material at your own pace, and apply when you have evidence of a validated problem and customer engagement.

What if my venture idea doesn’t work out?

That is part of the process. Early progress is often messy, uncertain, and small in scale. What matters is whether your learning is real, documented, and cumulative. The pathway helps you test and learn, not just succeed on the first try.

Do I need a business plan to get started?

No. You need evidence of a real customer problem and early validation. Formal business plans come later. Start by talking to potential customers, identifying a specific problem, and documenting what you learn.

Can I work with a team or co-founder?

Yes. Ventures can be led by individuals or teams. The application and evidence requirements apply to the venture as a whole. Contact the program team if you have specific questions about team-based applications.

Not ready to apply yet?

Access curated learning resources on Brightspace to start building the evidence and skills you need. Take them seriously — passive consumption does not count as progress.
