Workshop Offerings

On-computer coding workshop

Power Up!

Learn about the relationship between electric vehicles, climate change, and artificial intelligence! This workshop consists a hands-on activity where student build a working semi-autonomous EV, powered by Micro:bits. It also includes block or text coding – students build their EV from the ground up! Students are expected to work in pairs and follow instruction on a tutorial website that will further guide their exploration.

Off-computer engineering workshops

Gearing Up!

Discover the relationship between gear ratios and renewable energy systems. Students will explore the mechanical advantage associated with various gear trains and they will build their own wind turbine to see the practicality of various gear trains first-hand. Students are expected to work in pairs and complete a paper hand-out that will further guide their exploration.

Screw It Up!

An inquiry into values – specifically the value of screws as a simple machine and the powerful mechanical advantage they offer. Students will learn about real-world applications of screws and how to calculate the ideal and actual mechanical advantage while building their own motorcycle lift. Students are expected to work in pairs and complete a paper hand-out that will further guide their exploration.

Physics Ahoy!

Learn about the engineering design process, physics, and fun through the investigation of a beloved amusement park attraction – the gondola swing (often build to resemble a swinging pirate ship). Students will lead their own iterative designs to build their own functional gondola swing. Students are expected to work in pairs and complete a paper hand-out that will further guide their exploration.
