Application and Eligibility

You are encouraged to apply for admission to the Co-operative Education Program by the end of your first term of academic study. This option requires an initial study period of two academic terms, typically followed by two work terms, and a final academic period to complete the remaining requirements for the degree.

To be eligible for admission to Co-op, you must:

  1. be enrolled in the Master of Computer Science;
  2. have achieved, by the end of your first term of academic study, a minimum grade of A- in at least two 5000-level COMP courses;
  3. have achieved, by the start-date of the first work term, a minimum grade of A- in at least four 5000-level COMP courses;
  4. be registered as a full-time student in each academic term prior to a work term;
  5. be eligible to work in Canada (for off-campus work terms)

Co-op Work Terms

Work terms are four months duration, and you will conduct job searches through the university’s co-op office. During a work term, you will register in COMP 5913. While on a work term, you’re limited to one additional 0.5-credit course or registration in your thesis.

In addition to all other requirements for the degree, you must satisfactorily complete two work term placements with a suitable employer in order to graduate with a co-op designation. You must submit a work term report upon the completion of each work placement and receive a grade of Satisfactory in order to meet the requirements for the successful completion of that work term’s requirement.

It is desirable that the work placements be related to your research. Placements are subject to the approval of the Graduate Director and the your supervisor.
