Kathleen Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Humanities and a Combined Honours in Philosophy in the Spring of 2014. She won a prestigious Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) to pursue a Masters of Public Administration at Queen’s University this coming fall. She graduated with high distinction and won the Humanities Medal.
Kathleen maintained Dean’s List standing in all of her years of study at Carleton. Going into first year she received the Richard Lewar Scholarship for academic achievement and community involvement, and the Lee Valley award for having the highest average for an incoming student in the Humanities program. In second year she received the Beverly Krugel award for the highest average for a continuing Humanities student. She did a study year abroad in Leuven, Belgium, in her third year and wrote an undergraduate thesis on the political rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada, which received a score of 19/20.
During her time at Carleton, Katheleen was active in the social life of the College of the Humanities. She participated in the annual performance of a Greek tragedy, playing Ismene in Antigone and starring as Medea in Medea.
In her final year, she took on the role of a residence fellow, an intensive community leadership position which involved providing direct support for the personal, academic, health, and mental health needs of students living in residence, as well as planning and implementing building and residence-wide programming.
Kathleen was also involved in the wider Ottawa community, including performing with the St. Alban’s music ensemble and singing in the St. Matthew’s Women’s and Girl’s choir.
