Hi everyone! I will be the writing coach this year.

I graduated from the College of Humanities in 2007, with a double-major in English. Like so many students before and since, I was fascinated by the continuities (and, of course, discontinuities) of ideas from ancient times to the present. The idea that medieval literature can have philosophical backing ended up being influential to me, since I ended up getting a Ph.D. in medieval English literature from Queen’s University. Now, I teach English (mostly essay-writing) across Academic Quad in Carleton’s English Department, as well as business communication at Algonquin.

I can help you with the structure, format, grammar, documentation, and argumentation of any of your essays. It has been a while and the curriculum has changed quite a bit, so I will not always be able to help with content, but I imagine that I can help you show the relationship between ideas.

As you have been noticing, you will receive more assignments as the term moves forward, but you do have assistance and resources to help you out. One source of assistance is me, your College of Humanities Writing Coach. I can help you with assignment structure, organization, style, and grammar. I can aid you in forming arguments and finding evidence to back them up. It does not matter what the course or the assignment is—if it involves writing, I can at least try to help.

My office hours are 9am to 4pm on Mondays and Fridays. I will be holding these office hours in 2A35 Paterson Hall. That is in the hallway of Classics offices just one half-staircase down from the floor with the main HUMS classroom and lounge. You can find 2A35 directly at your left as soon as you enter the 2A hallway.

You do not need an appointment for any of those time periods on Monday or Friday. If you have class all day Monday or Friday, or otherwise cannot make it, it is possible to arrange a Zoom session. For that, or for any other questions about the Writing Coach service, please email me at matthewscribner@cunet.carleton.ca.

Thank you, and best regards,
