JMCE EU Policy Talk Lecture “What Does EU Citizenship and Identity Mean Outside of the EU?” by Agnieszka Weinar

May 27, 2020 at 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Location:Zoom online platform
Cost:Free

The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence is very pleased to present a new lecture in the EU Policy Talk series, “What does EU citizenship and identity mean outside of the EU?” with Agnieszka Weinar, Carleton University.

EU citizenship assures equal rights to all EU nationals in all Member States. Yet, the Union suffers from two issues: territorial limitation and limited symbolic appeal. Now, the EU is seeking to address important questions of the rights and obligations of EU citizenship after Brexit. Professor Weinar will discuss EU citizenship and identity outside of Europe, with a focus on Canada, and propose scenarios for the future of engagement of the EU with Europeans outside Europe.

Dr. Weinar is Team Leader of the EU-Canada Policy Dialogues in Ottawa and Adjunct Professor at the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) at Carleton University. Her most recent publication is European Citizenship and Identity Outside of the European Union: Europe Outside Europe? (Routledge, 2019). Between 2011 and 2014, she was a Scientific Coordinator and Research Fellow at the European University Institute (EUI). In 2014, she was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Outgoing Fellowship for Experienced Researchers at the EUI and Carleton University. Her current research interests address EU-Canada relations, North-North mobility systems and European diasporas. Since January 2019 she has been also the Chair of Marie Curie Alumni Association-North American Chapter. She is also a member of New Europeans, a civil society movement that lobbies for the rights of European citizens worldwide.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to attend the lecture.
