“Portraits of endophytes: the cryptic lives of fungi within tree leaves”

Dr. Joey Tanney
Research Scientist

Natural Resources Canada

Virtually all healthy plant leaves are colonized by fungi that are collectively called endophytes (endo – “inside”, phytes – “plants”). These fungi are phylogenetically, functionally, and chemotaxonomically very diverse and include species with complex life histories and a bewildering range of plant hosts. Similar to the human microbiome, endophytes may have a profound effect on plant health, for example by increasing resistance or tolerance to a variety of stresses such as drought, heavy metal toxicity, and even grazing by insects or invading pathogens. In this talk, I will provide insight from a forestry/mycology perspective into the identification, natural history, and potential applications of these ubiquitous yet relatively unknown fungi.
