This is a short-term contract to make a lasting impression with local environmental non-profit organizations, by being the first to design a framework to standardize data on university and college engagement opportunities and pilot the data collection/dissemination with community groups here in Ottawa.
You will be co-creating a brokering tool to strengthen connections between local environmental non-profit organizations, with the six (6) post-secondary institutions in the National Capital Region (Ottawa/Gatineau). Yes, this is a short contract; however, you will be researching & creating the first iteration of a data standard, which could also be beneficial to cities or regions with multiple university & colleges and to community organizations in many different sectors including social justice, health and civic engagement.
The Community First: Impacts of Community Engagement (CFICE) project is seeking an experienced Masters student or highly qualified undergraduate student to work as a Research Assistant for the Community-Campus Engagement (CCE) Brokering (Ottawa) Working Group. The position will run from January 22, 2018 to March 31, 2018 (possible spring/summer 2018 extension), with the student completing an average of 7 hours per week. The position will be compensated at a rate of between $18.00 – $26.10/hour depending on the student’s undergraduate or graduate status, and experience.
The CFICE CCE Brokering (Ottawa) Research Assistant shall work under the direct supervision of the CCE Brokering (Ottawa) Community and Academic Co-leads, Jason Garlough and Eileen O’Connor. The RA shall complete the following project, and shall assist with a range of tasks as listed below.
- Complete the CCE Brokering Opportunities ‘Database’ – March 31, 2018 deadline
The development of this database involves the following tasks:
- Becoming familiar with the project: Reading needs assessment and rationale for developing the inventory
- Devising preliminary categories & data standards to organize the information and finalize categories (mid February)
- Researching and collecting details on all CCE options at the 6 Ottawa post-secondary institutions
- This process will entail finding the opportunities, meeting with the people involved to identify specific opportunity details (dates, how to apply, etc.) and verify exact contacts/information
- Inputting data into the database
- Assisting with preparing written summaries for a potential grant application due end of February
- Assisting with developing and delivering community presentations (as needed)
Other Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Participating (by phone or in-person) in regular CCE Brokering Working Group update meetings and Program Committee meetings (as needed)
- Assisting with the completion of the CFICE Quarterly Report
- Assisting project leads with writing a journal manuscript
- Other duties as required
Qualifications:
- Current Carleton University Masters student or highly qualified undergraduate student
- An interest in the environmental sector is an asset
- Excellent English written and verbal communications skills — applications with grammatical and spelling errors will be automatically excluded from consideration
- Ability to read and speak French is an asset
- Administrative experience, including meeting coordination and minute-taking
- Experience collecting, organizing, processing, and sharing data for non-technical audiences
- Experience presenting research findings for non-technical audiences
- A proven ability to meet deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Independent worker with an ability to prioritize tasks with competing deadlines
- Comfortable asking questions for clarification and taking initiative
- A working knowledge of database applications (e.g. MS Access, Excel, etc.) is an asset
