The Iron Ring (now made of stainless steel) is worn by many Canadian-trained engineers on the little finger of their dominant hand as a symbol and reminder of the obligations and ethics associated with their profession. The ring, a symbol that reflects the moral, ethical and professional commitment made by the engineer who wears it, is presented to graduates annually in a closed ceremony known as The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer. This ceremony is private: it can only be attended by students who have already graduated from BEng at Carleton, those who are registered to graduate, and their guests who have already received their rings.
