Memo sent to first year students admitted to BEng Fall 2019, on April 3, 2020.
I am writing to share with you a recent change that was made in how second year status prerequisites for engineering courses will be implemented for next academic year.
As a result of the compassionate grading option for this Winter 2020 term, on April 1, 2020 the Faculty of Engineering and Design approved that second year status will include:
- ECOR 1051, 1052, 1053 and 1054 with a grade of D- (D minus)or higher AND
- all first year Math (1004 and 1104), Chemistry (1101 or 1001&1002), and Physics (1004 or 1001&1002) requirements with a D- (D minus) or higher AND
- if applicable, completion of all ESLA requirements.
Please note that if you convert your ECOR 105X passing grade(s) to SAT – these courses will satisfy the prerequisite requirements listed above.
Most importantly, this means that you will only need to repeat the ECOR 105x course(s) if you have earned an F final grade in your most recent attempt.
If you have earned a final grade of D-, D or D+ in your most recent attempt of an ECOR 105x courses you are notrequired to repeat the course(s) in order to move forward with engineering courses that require second year status.
If you are currently repeating a module to improve a previously earned D-, D, or D+ grade you now have the option to withdraw from this course. Please note that the deadline to withdraw from the Winter 2020 term is Tuesday April 7, 2020 by 11:59pm. You can withdraw from your repeat module course in Carleton Central, via the Add/Drop courses page.

FAQs
- The D- or higher requirement applies only to your final grade of your ECOR 105X courses – NOT your module grades. This means, that if you have earned a passing final grade, but have a F (failed) module grade you do NOT need to repeat the failed module in order to meet second year status.
- Your D-, D, and D+ grades from Fall 2019, Winter 2020, and Summer 2020 terms will satisfy the new second year status requirements, and will also count towards your CGPA. As a reminder, a minimum CGPA of 4.00 (C- average) is required at the end of first year for BEng students; for more details, please reference the Academic Performance Evaluation requirements here.
- If you are registered in a module repeat this Winter 2020 term because you earned a final grade of D-,D, or D+ for the course in the Fall 2019 term, you have the option to withdraw; the deadline is April 7, at 11:59pm using Carleton Central. When you withdraw from the repeat attempt this term, your Fall term grade will automatically count towards your CGPA, and your Winter term attempt will show as WDN on your transcript (not on your audit).
- F grades earned in Winter 2020 term will automatically be changed to UNS – this courses will not count towards your CGPA but will count as a discredit and towards the 3 Failures of a Course in Engineering (section 3.2.3).
- Students will need to request passing grades from Winter 2020 be converted to SAT. FAQs and how to can be found here.
- Students CANNOT request that Fall 2019 grades be converted to SAT/UNS – the compassionate grading option only applies to Winter 2020.
- The compassionate grading option in Winter 2020 term DOES NOT MODIFY THE MARKING SCHEME of the modules of the ECOR 105x courses. Your instructor will apply the marking scheme specified in the course outline for each module AND for the course.
