Graduate Travel-Research Grants on the European Union, European Integration, or EU-Canada Relations: Winter and Summer 2012

Based on funding from the European Commission and from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, Carleton’s Centre for European Studies (EU Centre of Excellence) invites applications for graduate travel research grants to support PhD and MA student research in member state countries of the European Union (EU) on topics related to the European Union or EU-Canada relations.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled graduate students at Carleton University or the University of Ottawa are eligible.

Applications should include the following:

• a letter of application (see below);

• an outline of the project (2 pages), including the name and contact details of the prospective or actual faculty research supervisor;

• a budget indicating other sources of funding received or applied for;

• a letter of support from the (actual or prospective) research supervisor, submitted in a sealed envelope with the referee’s signature across the seal.

The letter of application should explain why research in the European Union is necessary and what research activities will be involved, as well as the proposed timing, length, and location of the research. The purpose of the travel must be clearly related to the European Union, European integration, or Canada-EU relations.

Grants are normally between $1500 and $2500. Applications will be considered by a selection committee. Whether a grant is awarded and the size of a grant will depend on whether the project meets the criteria outlined, available funds, whether it is an MA or PhD project, the number of proposals funded, and the committee’s assessment of the needs of the particular project. Each proposal will be considered individually in light of these criteria; a particular request for funding may be adjusted accordingly. It is not anticipated that a grant will cover all costs associated with the proposed research travel. Travel related to the grant must be completed no later than October 15, 2012. Other conditions will apply, and will be indicated once tentative approval of the grant is given.

Application materials should reach Brigid Bedard, EU Programs Coordinator, Centre for European Studies, Carleton University by email: brigid_bedard@carleton.ca by March 9th, 2011. Applications for travel before that date will be considered as they are received.

It is a condition of the grant that the recipient must provide a written report on the use of the funds within four weeks of completion of the travel. Before funds can be dispensed, an indication from your department that the MA or PhD thesis proposal has been approved will be required, as well as ethics clearance if the interviews or research involves human subjects. If funding permits, a second round of the competition may follow with a due date in May. However, we encourage all prospective applicants to submit an application by the March deadline, even if the research proposal has not yet received final approval, since otherwise funds may no longer be available.
