The Centre for European Studies Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) are pleased to co-sponsor an EU Policy Talk, “Finland’s Choice to Apply for NATO Membership,” with His Excellency Roy Eriksson, Ambassador of Finland. This is an in-person event on the Carleton campus.

About the EU Policy Talk event:

Finland is one of six European Union member states that are not members of NATO. In May 2022, responding to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland – along with Sweden – submitted an application to join the alliance. In this presentation, Finland’s Ambassador explains his country’s path from neutrality during Cold War to the application for NATO membership. He will also address the latest developments in the ratification of Finland’s membership bid as well as the future role of Finland within NATO.

This event is in part to the War In Ukraine: One year in, a series in support of the War in Ukraine Observatory project, an organized initiative by EURUS.

About the presenter:

H.E. Roy Eriksson has been the Ambassador of Finland in Canada since 2019. This is the second time he has represented his country in Canada. He arrived in Canada from Mexico, where he served as the Ambassador of Finland to Mexico, as well as being the concurrent Ambassador of Finland to Central America.

Ambassador Eriksson started his career in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland in 1990. He has served in different departments of the Ministry, the latest being the Department for Americas and Asia, where he worked as the Director for Latin America and the Caribbean. Further to Mexico, he has served in Türkiye, Germany and the Finnish Permanent Mission to the European Union in Brussels.
