Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan will be speaking at Carleton to discuss Armenia’s foreign policy in tense geopolitical climate. Mr. Hovhannisyan will be visiting Ottawa from September 19-22 to discuss the advancement of Canada and Armenia’s bilateral relationship. The event is hosted by EURUS faculty member Dr. Jeff Sahadeo.

Backround: In April 2022, the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to the European Union and Europe (Hon. Stephane Dion) submitted a recommendation on Canada’s role in furthering and supporting democratic institutions and reforms in Armenia. Following this report, the Canadian government will be opening an Embassy in Yerevan. 

On the speaker: Paruyur Hovhannisyan’s career in international relations spans three decades. He has held positions in various Armenian ministries as an advisor on foreign affairs. Moreover, Mr. Hovhannisyan has held executive positions in Armenia’s permanent missions to both the UN and EU. Most recently, he was the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the Council of Europe before being appointed to the Deputy Ministership in November 2021.
