First Speaker: Memet Tohti was originally University teacher at Kashgar Normal University before his exile life since 1991, he is a prominent Uyghur rights activist and campaigner in Canada and worldwide. He was the founder of Uyghur Canadian Society and one of the core members in the establishment of world Uyghur Congress in 2004. He was appointed as a special representative of World Uyghur Congress to European Union in Brussels, Belgium during 2010-2012 period. He has testified twice at European Parliament and three times at Canadian House of Commons. During this time, he has campaigned and played a crucial role in introducing a European Parliament Resolution condemning the demolition of the 2000-year-old city of Kashgar by the Chinese government.
Second Speaker: Rukiye Turdush was born in East Turkistan. She is an ethnic Uyghur. She studied history at East China Normal University in Shanghai, and immigrated to Canada in 1998. She continued her studies of International Development at the University of Windsor and studied post – graduate social work at George Brown College. She is the former president of the Uyghur Canadian Society. Ms. Turdush also worked as a stringer for Radio Free Asia Uyghur service. She has published a book in Uyghur language and several opinion pieces in English. She lives in Toronto.
