The Politics of a “Holiday”: An open-house reflection about September 30th

October 1, 2021 at 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Location:Zoom Event
Cost:Free

Since September 30, 2013, when Phyllis Webstad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation shared her story about having her new orange shirt stripped away from her at a residential school, communities across the country have been celebrating Orange Shirt Day.

In 2021, September 30th has been designated a federal holiday for Truth and Reconciliation.  We invite the Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies community to gather for an open discussion that acknowledges the occasion and its many meanings, as well as the way September 30th relates to the ongoing colonization of Indigenous people on Turtle Island and questions of sovereignty, land repatriation, education, and violence.
