Kin on Kampus: Learning the Names of Trees on Campus
Thursday, April 24 12:00PM – 1:00PM
Join Carleton graduate student Bailey Wagner’s for a “Kin on Kampus” tour. This is a beginner’s introduction to learning the Anishinaabemowin, English and scientific names of trees across Carleton University’s campus. Those who register will enjoy a strolling tour of trees you can find on campus, and also receive a copy of Bailey’s printed guide for identifying trees in the area! An amalgamation of western and Indigenous knowledge; the intention of this activity is to promote relationships between humans and non-humans and settlers and Indigenous Peoples.
Bailey Wagner (they/them) is a Master’s student of Applied Science at Carleton University studying Environmental Engineering. Climate change adaptation is the focus of their research, which examines vulnerability, the intersection and inclusion of diverse identities, inclusion of Indigenous knowledges, and disaster management. Their passion for protecting the environment came from growing up as a settler on the traditional Lands of the Wendat, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples, where they were surrounded by forest and life. They are also an artist whose work centers on imagining futures under the climate crisis using multiple mediums such as fiber arts, paintings and collages.
Meeting Location: Entrance of Southam Hall (across from MacOdrum Library)
An alternate rain date will be announced if required, closer to the event date.
