Assistant Professor in Canadian History
The Department of History invites applications for a preliminary, tenure-track appointment in Canadian History (open field) at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2019.
The successful candidate will be expected to be an active contributor to the teaching, research, and administrative life of the department. Applicants must show distinct promise of a research program that will make significant contributions to the field of Canadian History, topically and methodologically. The successful candidate will have a proven record of publications commensurate with career stage.Teaching will consist of two full-year courses or the equivalent annually, made up of a combination of lecture and seminar courses in the first to the fourth year of the B.A., graduate seminars in the M.A. programs in History and in Public History, and in the Ph.D. degree program in History. A record of good teaching at the undergraduate level is an advantage. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to pedagogical innovation, especially experiential learning. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to graduate supervision and mentoring, including professional training for non-academic and academic jobs. Finally, the successful candidate will be involved in the administrative activities of the Department, which will include the development of the graduate and undergraduate programs, and other forms of service inside and outside the unit.
About the Academic Unit:
The Department of History has 28 permanent faculty members, nine of whom specialise in Canadian History. They also contribute to many Carleton interdisciplinary programs. Public history is an important part of the graduate program and most Canadianists in the department draw upon their expertise in a specific subject area to supervise, co-supervise, and examine students in the M.A. in Public History.
Historians of Canada at Carleton have the advantage of ready access to the historical resources in Ottawa, including Library and Archives of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History, the Canadian War Museum, and the Canada Science and Technology Museum. They also serve in local, national and transnational organizations.
The department values a wide range of contributions to the discipline and profession. This encompasses the production of non-traditional historical contributions, such as digital history projects, documentary films, and exhibitions, as well as public lectures, building collaborative institutional partnerships, and other forms of civic engagement through teaching and research projects. Qualifications:
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Canadian History or a related field, an established and active research program, potential for teaching innovation and excellence, as well as strong administrative skills. The field of expertise is open.
