July 28, 2018 – Premiere Screening of the Prosser Documentary
Documentary on Gananoque photographer Lorne Prosser to be premiered at the Child Museum and broadcast on CBC–Ottawa.
Prosser is the subject of a short documentary film –– “Prosser: A Portrait of a Small Town” –– produced by four recent Carleton University graduates –– André Bourbeau, Carly Pickett, Christine Smith and Heather Keary.
What began as a class project in a university history course (HIST 4302 –– Making Documentary History) has become a walk down memory lane for the town of Gananoque, Ontario. This delightful short documentary film explores Prosser’s work and, through anecdotes and stories of former friends and residents of Gananoque, creates an impression of the man behind the camera, who was responsible for preserving so many ‘treasured and cherished’ memories of the people and the town.

Only a Few Spots Remain in HIST 4302A – Making Documentary History
This is a unique course about storytelling, about taking history beyond academic papers and about creating an entertaining and enlightening short narrative historical documentary film.
There are no footnotes in film; instead students learn the value of combining rigorous research with artistic judgment. If you’re keen on finding a creative outlet for your enjoyment of history – then Making Documentary History is a course you should consider.
The basis of the course is interacting and engaging people in history, writing in a creative manner, experimenting with the limits of creative licence and the power of strong effective visuals to tell a story, the power of editing, collaborating with colleagues, and working with actors and composers. You are after “a good story, well told.”
The course is open to 4th year History students. Override requests will be considered on a case by case basis for students with 3rd year standing.

THE PASS SYSTEM, an investigative documentary film about the illegal segregationist practice of the Canadian government when many First Nations people in Canada were not allowed off reserve without a pass, is now available for viewing. The film is streaming online for a short time at CBC.ca – until July 21. The link to the film is HERE.
The film is narrated by acclaimed actor Tantoo Cardinal, with music by Cris Derksen, and featuring Elders from Treaty areas 4, 6, & 7, and leading historians, artists and academics. The film has screened widely across the country, and been the subject of many news stories, including this front page of the Toronto Star. It was nominated for two Canadian Screen Awards, for Best Editorial Research, and Best Historical Documentary.
