Research Profile

As a women’s historian (20th Century and Recent History), Dr. Veronica Norando is firmly committed to theory and practice. Her research topics cover the Americas’ History of Women, notably its feminist history, working women’s experiences, gender-based violence in domestic and workplace contexts, social reproduction and production, and female activism – the latter both non-politically affiliated and against the backdrop of feminist and left-wing organizations. Dr. Norando’s research is enhanced by its strong use of theory: she borrows concepts from Feminist Political Economy, Socialist Feminism, and Anti-capitalist Feminist Theory. Finally, her approach is intersectional: Dr. Norando’s analytical framework considers how gender, race, class, and age, among others such as nationality and religion, come together to produce social experiences.

Dr. Veronica Norando’s current research focuses on gender-based violence and the feminist movement in Latin America from a perspective of Feminist Political Economy from the end of the 19th Century to the present day. Her project investigates how the feminist movement addresses gender-based violence in different ways, as well as the origin of this gender-based violence. This project delves into Feminist Theory and Political Economy. Dr. Norando is currently developing a new theory that focuses on a mode of production that addresses more than just capital – it factors in the patriarchy. This theory approaches capital and patriarchy not as simple and separate systems that work in combination but as one and the same. To generate this theory, Dr. Veronica Norando uses concepts such as gender-based “objectified labour force,” “work,” “labour,” gender-based “exploitation,” “unpaid domestic work,” “paid work,” “social reproduction as work,” “social reproduction” and “production,” among others.

In Argentina, Dr. Veronica Norando held an Assistant Professorship at the Universidad de Buenos Aires for over 14 years. In parallel, for nine years, until 2023, she operated as a doctoral and postdoctoral researcher at the CONICET (National Council of Technical and Scientifical Research). Dr. Norando more recently joined the Carleton University community when she was invited as a guest lecturer for the Graduate Program in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Institute of Political Economy and Department of History.

Dr. Veronica Norando is the first author of the Spanish-language book Rojas: Clase, género y militancia comunista. This book is the culmination of 7 years of research based on never-before-analyzed primary sources. This research addresses the experiences of working women of the Argentine textile industry during the interwar period: working at the factory, while in the home, and during activism in the workplace. This publication also addresses how leftist currents were forced to adapt to the demands of the production and reproduction of life experienced by the working women. This research further raises debates within feminism. It delves into Feminist Theory from Feminist Political Economy. This book received great praise. In addition, Dr. Veronica Norando is the editor of another book authored by distinguished academics of the field such as Meg Luxton and Alessandra Mezzadri. Moreover, Dr. Norando has published over 20 scientific papers and participated in several scientific gathering, congresses, and international seminars, the contents of which have also been published in journals and books. Dr. Veronica Norando, is also an external international reviewer for national and international scientific organizations such as the Women’s World Banking Colombia (WWB Colombia) Foundation Fund for their Graduate Grants Program, as well as for the Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Government of Colombia (COLCIENCIAS). In addition, Dr. Norando is the recipient of multiple awards highlighting her excellence in teaching and the impact of her research. She has also been a speaker at a number of conferences.  Lastly, Dr. Norando has led research teams and supervised research assistants and graduate and undergraduate students at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Universidad de Buenos Aires.
