The Catholic Center for Immigrants in partnership with the International Student Services Office of Carleton University will deliver an interactive information session on Your Legal Rights as an Employee. This information is for International Students and their accompanying dependents who intend to work while they are under study permit as per the provisions under any of the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada’s work programs for students. You can work on or off campus, to know more, to stay informed and prepared, you are invited to attend this important information session that will discuss the following topics.

  • Your Legal Entitlement to Work a Student: Discuss how International students and their accompanying spouses/dependents are legally able to work in Ontario under the following scenarios: Work on campus, Work off campus and Work as a co-op or intern
  • Requirements to be eligible for a Work Permit: Discuss the conditions and required supporting documents for co-op or internship employment including the Post-Graduation Work Permit
  • Requirements for Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work in Canada for both on and off campus work.
  • Know the Rules: The Employment Standards Act (ESA): defining the rights and responsibilities employees and employers in Ontario. Discuss benefits including minimum wages in Ontario, who is covered by the minimum wage provisions in the ESA, vacation time and pay, statutory holidays, meal breaks (lunch and coffee break)
  • Termination of Employment and Your Rights: describe situations when employment can be terminated, what does the ESA require and employer to provide for proper termination of an employee
