What is Action Learning?
- Method of collaborative learning developed by Professor Reg Revans
- Based on group of 5-8 people who meet together to discuss work related issues and support each other in their learning
- Gives members ‘gift of time’ to explore the problems in a supportive environment which helps them to find a solution themselves
- Focus is on problems (many different solutions) not puzzles (either a right or wrong answer)
How will the Carleton Leader Action Learning process operate?
- Simple in principle – individual members present a problem, have their thinking provoked by the questions of fellow group members to help them generate some ideas they can take away and try out.
- Generally process will involve:
- Each member in turn presents issue
- Rest of group get involved in helping problem holder explore their issue and assumptions/barriers surrounding it
- Use of questioning and co-coaching methods to help member think, analyze and see issue from different perspectives
- Group generating ideas and potential solutions for individual
- Reflection on what has been learned about the issue and the process of learning
- First meeting should include time to discuss and agree ways of working, including ground rules
- Ground rules should include:
- All discussions within the group meeting are confidential and must not be divulged to anyone outside the group
- Each member has an equal responsibility to learn and to help the learning of others
- ‘Air’ time during the meeting should be shared equitably
