Student Support Resources and Referrals 101

This workshop will help participants to understand their role in the network of student support at Carleton University. It will explore help-seeking behaviours in students, the holistic student experience, an overview of various student support services on campus, and will include best practices for an effective referral, including specific attention on how FIPPA plays into the referral process. At the end of this workshop, staff and faculty will be able to:

-Recall at least one colleague and describe their role in student support at Carleton University

-Explain the holistic student experience and their role in the system of support at Carleton University

-Describe barriers to students accessing resources and construct solutions to encourage students to connect with resources

-Recall a variety of Carleton services and assess which service is an appropriate referral for students in novel situations

-Identify the steps involved in a completing a successful referral and utilize strategies for managing complex referrals

-Evaluate situations to determine whether a disclosure of personal information is permissible under FIPPA
