Linguavision 2026
Linguavision is an annual singing competition for Carleton language learners. Contestants (individuals and groups) sing songs in the language they’re learning in front of a live audience. A panel of judges (and the audience) scores performances on both language and performance criteria. Cash prizes and bragging rights to be had!
31 March, 2026 in KM Theatre. The event is FREE and open to the public. Doors at 7 PM.
Meet this Year’s Performers
Madie
Japanese
Global and International Studies (2nd Year)
Hi everyone, my name is Madie! I’m a 2nd-year Global and International Studies student taking Japanese classes at Carleton. This is my first time doing Linguavision, but I’ve been interested since I first heard about and saw it last year. I’m quite passionate about music and did concert and jazz band all throughout middle and high school. I’ve been learning Japanese on and off since 2018 and am super excited to get out of my comfort zone, perform and have fun!
Komal
French
French (3rd Year)
Hi my name is Komal Saxena. I’m a third year student in the French program. I am someone who enjoys singing. I have always enjoyed singing since I was a little girl but I haven’t had many opportunities to sing in front of others.
The song I have picked is Je Veux par Zaz. I like this song because it sounds nice. It’s also an easy song for me to sing. I also genuinely like the artist and her voice
I’m hoping to challenge myself again by singing in front of a crowd.
Sophie
Spanish
Marketing (1st Year)
My name is Sophie, and I am a first-year business student specializing in marketing. I joined Linguavision to step outside my comfort zone and share something I have loved since I was little: singing. Music has always been part of my everyday life. I sing constantly — at home, while cooking, in the shower — and I often create melodies and songs in my mind, even if I have never formally written or recorded them. I have never taken vocal lessons; singing has simply always been a natural way for me to express myself.
I am currently taking a Spanish course and chose to perform in Spanish to challenge myself both musically and linguistically. Spanish has always been part of my life. My parents are from Chile and lived in Spain for many years, so I grew up hearing the language at home. I was born in France and later moved to Canada, which shaped my experience with French, Spanish, and English.
For me, performing is a way to channel emotion and tell a story through art, while also showcasing creativity, expression, and artistry.
Chi
Korean
Global and International Studies (2nd Year)
Hi there! I’m Chi, a second-year student in Bachelor of Global and International Studies. Though I haven’t been learning Korean for long (about a year to be exact), growing up I’ve always been immersed in the Korean cultural sphere, being especially keen on the vibrant music scene. I’m hopeful that through my performance, I’ll be able to express my enthusiasm to an amazing audience! 2026 Linguavision 많관부~!!!
Chau
Japanese
Biology (3rd Year)
Hi everyone! My name is Chau, and I’m a third-year Biology Honours student with a minor in Japanese. I’ve been into Japanese media, especially anime and games, for as long as I can remember, and have always wanted to learn the language. I finally got the chance to learn it formally after coming to Carleton, and wanted to give Linguavision a shot since I love to sing! Music has always been a haven for me, and I fell in love with J-pop after hearing it in different animes. I love how music has a special way of conveying emotions, and you don’t need to understand the lyrics to connect with a song. I will be performing “冬のはなし” from the anime Given, and I hope that my feelings will transcend language barriers and reach you!
Stef & Alex
Spanish
Information Technology (3rd Year) (Stef)
Master of Design (Alex)
¡Hola! Stef and Alex running into Linguavision 2026 with the song ‘No Hay 2 Sin 3’! Huge lovers of soccer, we are celebrating the upcoming FIFA 2026 World Cup and all the Spanish-speaking cultures that are tied so closely to the beautiful game. We have both been studying Spanish for 1 year now, and cheering for soccer teams for 10… even though we really need practice on both of these 🙂
So with that, join us, put your hands up and shout for the goals – ¡Sube la mano y grita GOL!
Cobra
Japanese
Linguistics (2nd Year)
Hi, I’m Cobra, a second year student studying Linguistics. I’m excited to perform once again at Linguavision. This year I am playing and singing another Japanese song on piano. My partner introduced me to this song as well as a lot of other Japanese tunes. I hope you all enjoy!
Zahra
Japanese/Korean
Biology (2nd Year)
Hi! 안녕하세요! and こんにちは! My name is Zahra Mashhadi, a second-year Biology student with a passion for language learning. I began engaging with Japanese five years ago and Korean a year later, inspired by movies, TV shows, and music. Outside of my major’s workload, these are my comfort hobbies, and they help me survive super long assignments. If you see me on campus with headphones on, I’m probably silently vibing to J-rock or K-pop while studying. I love watching performances and doing karaoke, and after singing a bit in my Korean class, I decided to join Linguavision. I’ll be taking a big leap out of my comfort zone to sing for you all.
I’ll be performing a J-pop ballad by Aimer, adding my own Korean touch. The song reflects memories and emotions, along the way to reaching acceptance after parting ways. I chose it for how much its perspective deeply resonated with me. I can’t wait to share this performance and meet other language learners. And, truth be told, someday I hope to tell my kids: you’d never guess what your mom did on a random Tuesday!
Arnold
Mandarin Chinese
Marketing (4th Year)
Hi I’m Arnold, I’m a fourth year marketing student minoring in Chinese. I decided to make something out of the ordinary for this performance, excited for you all to hear it.
Serena
Japanese
Global and International Studies (1st Year)
Hi everyone, my name is Serena! I’m a first-year Global and International Studies student. My journey with Japanese really took off when I lived in Japan for a year as a high school exchange student. While I was there, I fell in love with the culture, and specifically karaoke! For Linguavision, I wanted to challenge myself by stepping out of my comfort zone to perform an Enka song. I love how Enka captures such deep, raw emotion, and I’m excited to bring that traditional soulful style to the stage!
Tre Stelle
Italian
Commerce (4th Year) (Léa-Marie) * International Student
Neuroscience and Mental Health (3rd Year) (Aida)
Psychology (1st Year) (Francesca)
Ciao, we are Léa, Aida, and Francesca, a small group of second-year Italian students. We love the Italian language and enjoy expressing it through our passion for singing and acting. We’re excited to share the song we’ve chosen and tell you the story behind it. Ci vediamo presto!
Lucy
Spanish
Music (3rd Year) * Exchange Student
I’m an exchange student (3rd year) from Ireland and I study music, I’ve been studying at Carleton for the past year – which means I’ve been thrown into to new accents, new systems, and new ways of pronouncing my name. So, singing in Spanish felt like the next logical step.
I’ve been learning Spanish for five years… with a small two-year break where I like to think I was “letting it marinate.” This year, I decided to pick it back up because I missed it – and because five years is far too long to still be negotiating with irregular verbs.
Music has been a much more consistent commitment in my life. I’ve been playing and learning music since I was 10, and I play piano. Somewhere between scales and key changes, I realised language and music aren’t that different. Both require rhythm, confidence, and the ability to recover smoothly when something goes slightly wrong.
So entering this contest feels like combining two things that have shaped me – music and Spanish.
If all else fails, at least the piano can’t correct my pronunciation.
Noela
Mandarin Chinese
Accounting (4th Year)
Hi I’m Noela! From a young age I’ve loved to learn languages, sing and watch shows. Chinese is one of the languages I took interest in learning from the time I was in middle school (along with Korean)! Whether through the shows, the music, the books or the classroom, learning the language has been one of the most exciting and rewarding processes ever! I’m very excited to keep learning more and more.
I find the songs in Chinese dramas to be so beautiful, and they’re always my favourite part. That is why the song I chose comes from one of my favourite Chinese dramas called A Love So Beautiful’s OST. This show is one of the first Chinese dramas I ever watched in middle school. Ever since I watched the show, the Opening theme song was one I had on repeat on my mp3 player where I happened to learn my first few Chinese words that I’ll never forget: “我喜欢你” and the reply “我不喜欢你” (cut from the scene where the main characters as school students were sweeping outside and one told the other” I like you” and the other replied “I don’t like you”) that would be heard before the song started playing. This was one of the many things that sparked my interest and curiosity in learning. I’m so happy that after all these years, not only can I listen to this song, but I can also understand and read the words to it too! It is such a cute song and I hope you’ll like it too! I hope to make my performance feel something like the show and the words of the song.
Niyana
Korean
Cognitive Science (1st Year)
Hi everyone, I’m Niyana (My legal name is Waersi Nigere, but I go by Niyana). I’m a first-year Cognitive Science student . I’m from China, I’ve been in Canada for three years. I like singing, dancing, playing piano, painting, and games. I chose Korean this semester becouse I love Kpop so bad and I feel like learning Korean would be much convinient for me to understand what they are saying and learning their lyrics. I used to participate in stage performances like this back in high school, but most of them were just dancing. I’ve actually studied vocal for quite a while but didn’t have that much opportunity to show my telent, and that’s why I decided to join this contest. Also, I used to dream of becoming an idol, and this time I want to try singing and dancing at the same time and shine on the stage just like the idol I like!
Chloé
Italian
Global and International Studies (2nd Year)
My name is Chloé Paturel and as a Global and International Studies student at Carleton set to study abroad in Rome next year, I had better learn Italian quickly! For one night and one night only, I will be performing the well-known, beautiful song of resistance Bella Ciao! If you know the refrain, please feel free to sing along!
Alex
Italian
Global and International Studies (3rd Year)
Ciao tutti! I will sing in Italian, also known as the musical language. Since I could remember I loved singing, in French then in English, and I really enjoyed my years taking Italian classes. So why not combine both? A little bit about the song: it is titled Maledetto ciao, sung by Gianna Nannini (who has a film on her singing career on Netflix!). The song is about suffering and fighting for life, a reminder that pain and joy can coexist.
