Finals & Fresh Starts
PMC Learning Strategies: December Edition
The semester is wrapping up, and December brings both the challenge of final exams and the promise of a new year. With deadlines, projects, and exams all converging, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Here are some strategies to help you finish strong and step into 2026 with confidence.
1. Fine-Tune Your Study Plan
By now, you’ve likely started reviewing, but December is about refining your plan:
- Double-check exam dates, times, and locations. If accommodations like extra time are available, check your Ventus Portal or connect with your PMC Coordinator to ensure they are arranged.
- Prioritize courses with earlier exams or heavier content.
- Use focused study intervals (e.g., 45 minutes study + 15 minutes break).
- Keep your schedule visual—weekly calendars or digital planners can help you stay on track.
Explore the Studying Module in the PMC Learning Strategies -PMC_Learning_Strategies course for templates and strategies.
- How to Register for the PMC Learning Strategies Modules: In the “Discover” tab on the Brightspace Main page, search PMC Learning Strategies – PMC_Learning_Strategies, and select enrol. If the course does not appear, you may already be enrolled so check the “select a course” menu in Brightspace.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email the PMC Learning Strategies Team at PMC_LS@cunet.carleton.ca.
2. Maximize Your Tools
Digital tools can make studying more efficient:
- Anki for spaced repetition and effective memorization using digital flashcards.
- Quizlet for flashcards and shared study sets.
- Gizmo AI for creating personalized study quizzes.
- Notebook LM for organizing and linking your notes with ease audio podcasts. These tools can help reinforce your knowledge and track your progress.
Experiment with these tools to find what works best for your learning style.
3. Take-Home & Online Exams
Take-home exams require careful planning:
- Read instructions thoroughly before starting.
- Outline your responses to stay organized.
- Cite sources properly and proofread before submission.
- Manage your time. Don’t leave everything for the last day.
4. Final Projects & Presentations
If you’re wrapping up a thesis, capstone, or major project:
- Break tasks into smaller steps (research, drafting, slides, rehearsal).
- Set mini-deadlines to avoid last-minute stress.
- Practice presentations aloud to build confidence.
5. Stress & Self-Care
December can be intense, but balance is key:
- Take short breaks to recharge.
- Connect with peers for support.
- Visit the Wellness Desk in 204A MacOdrum Library if stress feels overwhelming.
- Remember: rest is part of productivity.
Bundle up with your notes, sip something cozy, and “sleigh” those finals. December success is “snow” joke! You got this!
