CALL FOR PAPERS
DOCTORAL THESIS WORKSHOP
CARLETON UNIVERSITY
APRIL 15, 2016
The Institute of Political Economy at Carleton University will host a PhD Thesis Workshop on April
15, 2016. We welcome submissions from doctoral students currently working on a dissertation
chapter or proposal on any issue related to political economy. This is a great opportunity for students
to practice articulating their research to a diverse audience and will provide students with valuable
feedback from faculty and graduate colleagues for consideration moving forward.
The Institute of Political Economy was established in 1989 and was built on a strong tradition of
interdisciplinary studies at Carleton. It joins together Canadian Studies, Geography and
Environmental Studies, History, Journalism and Communication, Law and Legal Studies, Political
Science, the School of Public Policy and Administration, Sociology and Anthropology, the School of
Social Work and the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies. Submissions from these and related
disciplines are welcome.
Students will be asked to provide a short presentation of their work after which a faculty member will
act as a discussant and provide some initial insight on the paper. Participating students and faculty
will read all accepted chapters and proposals prior to the workshop in order to facilitate quality
discussion and feedback.
Applicants are asked to provide a 250-word abstract of a dissertation chapter or proposal that they
would like to bring to the workshop by January 15, 2016. Students will be notified of their
acceptance one week after the close of submissions. If your abstract is accepted, you will be expected
to submit your final draft chapter or proposal to the workshop organizers no later than March 25,
2016 to provide participants enough time to read and comment on all papers. Papers that are not
received by this date may be removed from the program.
Please include in your submission:
• Your name, advisor’s name, school and department
• Your current status in your program (year, or whether you are ABD)
• A 250 word abstract of the chapter or proposal
• A brief (150 to 250 word) description of your dissertation project if you are submitting a chapter
Please send your application to ipecarleton.workshop@gmail.com.
Please direct any questions to the same email address.
*While lunch, coffee and snacks will be provided, participants are expected to cover the costs of
travel. An informal social event will also be held after the workshop for participating faculty and
students.
