To all Members of the Carleton Community,
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Adrian Chan has been appointed as Assistant Vice-President (Academic) in the Office of the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic). Dr. Chan is a professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering and recently served as Associate Dean (Programs and Awards) in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs. He will begin his new responsibilities on August 1 continuing until July 31, 2018.
Dr. Chan is replacing Dr. André Loiselle who served in this position for the past two years. We would like to take this opportunity to thank André for his exemplary service in support of the quality assurance process, leadership development at Carleton, and many other key initiatives.
Since his arrival at Carleton in 2002, Dr. Chan has distinguished himself as a scholar and teacher. His research interests are in non-invasive sensors, biological signals, signal and image processing, multi-expert systems, and pattern classification. He was presented with the Outstanding Biomedical Engineer of the Year Award at the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society in 2015 for his outstanding accomplishments in the area of biomedical monitoring. In 2013, he received a Carleton University Research Achievement Award.
Adrian has been recognized repeatedly by his colleagues and students for his teaching. He was the recipient of a 3M National Teaching Fellowship in 2012 recognizing him as one of Canada’s most exceptional university teachers. Ottawa presented him with a Capital Educator Award in 2008 as one of the region’s most innovative and respected educators. He recently received a Faculty Graduate Mentoring Award and a Provost Teaching Fellow award. As further testament to his teaching capabilities, his graduate students have been recognized with a number of awards, most recently a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and Ontario Graduate Scholarship.
In 2012, Dr. Chan established the Adrian D.C. Chan Award for Volunteer and Community Services. This award is presented annually to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in the Faculty of Engineering and Design. Dr. Chan created the award as a way to thank the many engineering students who contribute to the university and their community. His own involvement in the community has included a directorship of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering, and Vice-President of the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society. For several years, he was the program director for the Carleton Shad Valley program. He has been a visiting scientist with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and Visiting Professor at the University of New Brunswick. He presently chairs the Advisory Board for the Research, Education, Accessibility, and Design (READ) Initiative and sits on numerous university committees including the Advisory Committee on the President’s Selection.
In his new role as Assistant Vice-President, Adrian will be working closely with Dr. Lorraine Dyke, Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic). He will focus on assisting with the operation of the Quality Assurance process. Responsibilities will also include support for curriculum development and other academic initiatives and will include roles on a variety of university committees. Dr. Dyke notes that, “Adrian’s experience in program development and quality assurance will be invaluable. We are very fortunate to have him joining the team.”
Please join us in welcoming Adrian Chan to this new position and thanking him for his continued demonstration of leadership, commitment and support to Carleton University.
