To All Members of the Carleton Community,
It is my pleasure to announce that Prof. Adrian Chan has agreed to serve as Interim Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) for up to six months effective July 1, 2018 while the search process continues.
Adrian has served as Assistant Vice-President (Academic) in the Office of the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) since August 2017, where he supported the university’s academic quality assurance processes and was instrumental in leading and promoting program and curriculum development. Prior to this appointment, he served as Associate Dean (Programs and Awards) in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs.
Adrian is a professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering and Director of Carleton’s Research and Education in Accessibility, Design, and Innovation (READi) training program funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada through its Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program.
Since his arrival at Carleton in 2002, Adrian has distinguished himself as a scholar and teacher and has been recognized repeatedly by colleagues and students for his exceptional teaching.
He received a Capital Educator Award in 2008, identifying him as one of the region’s most innovative and respected educators, and a 3M National Teaching Fellowship in 2012, which recognized him as one of the country’s most exceptional university teachers. He has also received the Faculty Graduate Mentoring Award and Provost Teaching Fellow Award. As a further testament to his teaching capabilities, his graduate students have been recognized with a number of awards, including the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and Ontario Graduate Scholarship.
Adrian is taking over from Dr. Joy Mighty, who has served in the position since November 2012. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to Joy for the valuable contributions she has made to Carleton and to Canada’s teaching and learning community during her term and for her leadership during a changing time in teaching and learning. Dr. Mighty will take administrative leave on July 1, 2018, but will return to Carleton next year in a half-time position in the Office of the Provost as Senior Scholar for Innovation in Teaching and Learning.
Our search for an incoming Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) continues. We have strong candidates and we remain optimistic that we will be able to make an appointment announcement in due course.
Please join me in congratulating Prof. Adrian Chan on this appointment and thanking him for agreeing to serve in this interim capacity.
Jerry Tomberlin Interim Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
