To All Members of the Carleton Community,

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dwight Deugo has been appointed Assistant Vice-President (Academic) for a four-year term beginning Aug. 1, 2018. His duties will focus primarily on the operation of the Quality Assurance (Academic) process under the auspices of the Office of the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) led by Lorraine Dyke. Responsibilities will include support for curriculum development and other academic initiatives, as well as roles on a variety of university committees.

“We were very impressed with Dwight’s leadership during his time as Interim Dean of Science,” said Dr. Dyke. “He will be a perfect fit in this position as he takes on the many aspects of assuring the quality of our programs at Carleton and furthering our academic goals.”

Dwight has been Interim Dean of Science since July 2017 and will remain in the position until the new Dean, Chuck Macdonald, arrives on Aug. 1. Before becoming Interim Dean, he was Associate Dean of Science (Recruiting and Retention), a position he held since 2012. An Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science, he received his MCS and PhD degrees in Computer Science from Carleton University. He was Editor-In-Chief of the Java Report and Director of Java Services at The Object People before joining Carleton in 1997.

He has immersed himself in objects for more than 30 years and has done extensive consulting in object-oriented languages and systems, particularly in areas related to Java, Smalltalk and Eclipse. His research interests include the use and development of Open Source software and Mobile Computing. His past research includes the development of pattern search tools and the analysis and optimization of network connections in peer-to-peer systems using Genetic Algorithms. Other projects include the development of a collaborative work environment using Eclipse and the design and evaluation of peer-to-peer protocols using large-scale simulation.

Dwight is replacing Adrian Chan, who has been our Assistant Vice-President this past year. Adrian will return to the Faculty of Engineering as a professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering. We would like to thank Adrian for his contributions this past year. His support of the academic quality assurance processes of the university and his leadership in promoting program and curriculum development has been truly outstanding.
