L. Pauline Rankin Renewed as Dean of Carleton’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Carleton University President Benoit-Antoine Bacon and Provost Jerry Tomberlin have announced that L. Pauline Rankin’s appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) has been renewed for a second five-year term, effective July 1, 2023.
“Pauline’s proven leadership, experience as an academic administrator and accomplishments throughout her inaugural term as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences make her well-positioned to continue leading the Faculty in this key role,” said Provost Tomberlin, who chaired the renewal advisory committee. “Thank you to the members of the advisory renewal committee for their commitment to this process and please join me in congratulating Pauline on her well-deserved reappointment.”
Prior to her initial appointment as Dean of FASS on July 1, 2018, Pauline served as Carleton’s Associate Vice-President (Research and International) and as Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Affairs) in FASS. She also completed terms as Director of both the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation (formerly the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies) and the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies.
Dr. Rankin is a political scientist with an appointment as Professor in the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies. She has received multiple teaching accolades and her research spans various aspects of gender and politics, with specific interest in domestic and global applications of gender mainstreaming, gender activism and gender equality measurement. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto in English Literature and holds an MA in Canadian Studies and PhD in Political Science from Carleton.
“Leading the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has been the highlight of my professional career,” said Rankin. “The talent of the faculty, staff and students I’ve been honoured to serve continues to inspire me. I’m excited by opportunities and challenges of a second term as dean and look forward to what we can achieve together.”
