On behalf of Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Jerry Tomberlin, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Daniel Siddiqi as Vice-Provost (Graduate Studies), effective July 1, 2024, for a five-year term.
In this new role, Dr. Siddiqi will assume responsibility for internal graduate studies operations, including collaboration with the Faculties on strategic initiatives related to Carleton’s graduate enterprise, and liaising with external graduate-focused bodies and funding agencies.
Following the transition of Senate-related processes to the Faculties, as well as changes to the Academic Governance of the University (AGU) approved by the Board of Governors earlier this month, the name of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs will be updated to the Office of Graduate Studies, effective July 1.
Dr. Siddiqi is a Full Professor in the School of Linguistics and Language Studies who has served as the Associate Dean, Programs, in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs since 2021. In this position, he has played an instrumental role in Carleton’s academic quality assurance portfolio and curriculum as they relate to graduate studies. He also serves on the Senate Quality Assurance and Planning Committee, and chairs both the Senate Committee on Curriculum, Admissions and Studies Policy and the Senate Review Committee. Previously, he held the role of Associate Director, Linguistics in the School of Linguistics and Language Studies. Dr. Siddiqi holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California, Davis, a Master of Fine Arts in English from Mills College, and a Master of Arts in Linguistics and a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Arizona.
The role of the Vice-Provost (Graduate Studies) replaces the role of Dean, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (FGPA). I would like to take this opportunity to offer my warmest thanks to Dr. Patrice Smith, who is completing a five-year term as Dean of FGPA on June 30, 2024, before taking a well-deserved administrative leave. Dr. Smith led FGPA through the very difficult period of the pandemic, ensuring the well-being of graduate students and the continuation of the graduate enterprise. She has offered important leadership in the process of reimagining and restructuring graduate studies at Carleton and oversaw several FGPA innovations.
Please join me in congratulating Dan on his appointment and thanking Patrice for her many contributions as Dean of FGPA.
Sincerely,
L. Pauline Rankin Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
