On Wednesday, May 25, the timetable for 2016-17 will be made available on Carleton Central.

As you prepare to register for classes for 2016-17, I would be glad to meet with any of you to discuss your course options, and to make sure that things are on track with your degree requirements.  Please email me if you would like to set up an individual meeting to go over your audit and course selections.

If you would just like a quick refresher on your program requirements, you can find them listed on our website, here: http://carleton.ca/philosophy/prospective-students/undergraduate/program-requirements/

For some more specific suggestions, please keep reading:

IF YOU HAVE SECOND-YEAR STANDING IN A PHIL PROGRAM:

*All PHIL honours and joint honours students are required to take PHIL 2010 (Issues in Theoretical Philosophy) and PHIL 2020 (Issues in Practical Philosophy).  I would suggest that you take both of these sooner rather than later, as they are pretty key courses and can help prepare you for a number of third-year courses.  (Also, because you don’t want to get to your fourth year and suddenly realize that you’ve forgotten to enroll in these classes!)

*PHIL honours students are required to take PHIL 2005 (Greek Philosophy and the Western Tradition), which is a full-year class.  I suggest taking this one sooner than later, too.

*PHIL honours students, general majors, and minors are required to take either PHIL 2001 (logic) or PHIL 2003 (critical thinking).  These are each offered almost every semester, including in the summer.  I highly recommend taking these early on in your philosophy degree, because they will help you prepare for your upper-year courses.  If you are not sure whether you would prefer PHIL 2001 or PHIL 2003, come speak to me or email me, and we can discuss.

IF YOU HAVE THIRD-YEAR STANDING IN A PHIL PROGRAM:

*PHIL honours students are required to take PHIL 3002 (17th century philosophy) and PHIL 3003 (18th century philosophy).  **Going forward, we will only be offering these courses on alternating years.**  PHIL 3002 will be offered in Fall 2016, and so it will NOT be offered in 2017-18.  If you have not yet taken PHIL 3002, and if you intend to graduate in 2017-18, you must take it in Fall 2016.

*Joint honours students must take 2.0 cr of PHIL classes in “History of Philosophy.” If you have any trouble selecting these courses, please come speak to me or email me, and I would be happy to advise you on your course selection.

*Have you fulfilled or are you coming close to fulfilling your “Ethics, Society and Aesthetics” and “Language, Mind and World” requirements? Do you know what these are? If not, let’s chat!

*General major students must take at least 0.5 cr of PHIL at the third-year level or higher, and at least 3.0 cr in PHIL at the second-year level or higher.  Make sure that you are not overloading your schedule with first-year classes.

*General majors: are you planning to graduate in 2016-17? (Yay!) Come see me to make sure that you are on track to graduate – you don’t want to encounter any nasty surprises in March!

IF YOU HAVE FOURTH-YEAR STANDING IN A PHIL PROGRAM:

*All PHIL honours and joint honours students are required to take a number of fourth-year credits.  Honours students must take 2.0 cr in PHIL at the fourth-year level, and joint honours students are required to take 1.0 cr in PHIL at the fourth-year level.  If you are not sure which seminars you would like to take, please do feel free to come speak with me or email me about the possibilities.

*Are you planning to graduate in 2016-17? (Yay!) Come see me to make sure that you are on track to graduate – you don’t want to encounter any nasty surprises in March!
