- In-person event
Please join us for the annual Shirley Thomson Memorial lecture. This year’s lecture will be given by Diana Nemiroff, former Director of the Carleton University Art Gallery and Curator of Modern Art at the National Gallery of Canada. Diana’s lecture, entitled“Against All Odds: Jean Sutherland Boggs, Hsio-Yen Shih, Shirley Thomson, and the National Gallery of Canada,” addresses the work and legacy of the three former women directors of the National Gallery of Canada. The event will take place at the Ottawa Art Gallery (50 Mackenzie King Bridge) on Thursday, October 4 at 6:00 pm. A reception will follow the lecture. The event is free and open to all.
The Shirley Thomson Memorial annual lecture series, which was first held in 2011, honours the memory of Dr. Shirley Thomson (1930-2010), a leading national figure in the promotion of the visual arts in Canada. A Companion of the Order of Canada, Thomson held many important cultural positions, including Director of the National Gallery of Canada (1987-97) and Director of the Canada Council for the Arts (1998-2002).
This event is sponsored by the School for Studies in and Culture at Carleton University, the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture at Carleton University, the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa, the Carleton University Art Gallery, and the Ottawa Art Gallery.
