Who is Career Services?

For: Undergraduate and graduate students, support staff

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

• Recognize how various experiences can help inform their career paths
• Identify the events, services and resources offered by Career Services

Your Career Starts Now!

For: 1st and 2nd year students

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

• Identify the events, services and resources offered by Career Services that can help them begin their career planning now
• Dispel common career myths
• Gain an increase in clarity about the career planning process by reviewing the four stages in the “Career Ready” Cycle
• Discover online resources that can help them learn about career options that align with their interests
• Recognize the importance of experiential learning as a method of career researching and some of the key programs and resources available to them

For: 3rd and 4th year students

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

• Identify services, resources and events offered by Career Services
• Identify Carleton University’s Career Competencies
• Recognize the importance of self-knowledge in career planning and targeting a job search
• Find out how to identify skills and employment opportunities
• Discover new job search strategies, tools and the hidden job market
• Identify different networking tools and strategies to expand networking opportunities

Resume and Cover Letter Development

For: Undergraduate and graduate students

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

• Identify the resume style that best highlights their skills and experiences
• Develop the ability to format a targeted resume for specific positions and organizations
• Discover how to identify and best market transferable skills
• Dissect a job description by reviewing transferable skills
• Identify the purpose and sections of a cover letter
• Distill and highlight developed skills through a review of past experiences
• Write accomplishment-based job and skill statements for job applications

CV and Cover Letter Development

For: Graduate students

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

• Differentiate between a resume and CV
• Develop the ability to format a targeted CV for specific positions and organizations
• Discover how to identify and best market transferable skills
• Distill and highlight developed skills through a review of past experiences
• Write accomplishment-based job and skill statements for job applications
• Identify the purpose of the sections of a cover letter

Preparing for an Interview

For: Undergraduate and graduate students

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

• Identify types of interview questions including informational, behavioural and situational questions
• Discuss strategies to prepare for a job interview
• Identify the benefits of using a Situation-Action-Result (SAR) response for specific interview questions
• Compare and contrast different interview formats (face-to-face, video, group interview)
• Identify proper interview etiquette to create a good impression with an employer

Identifying Your Career Competencies

For: Undergraduate students

Option A:  One Workshop
Identifying Career Competencies

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

• Define a competency
• Assess specific Career Competencies using a skills inventory
• Identify Career Competencies from their assignments
• Write accomplishment statements for their assignments or projects

Option B: Two Workshops
*Typically one workshop is at the beginning of the course, and the other workshop is towards the end of the course.

Part 1: Identifying Career Competencies

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

• Define a competency
• Identify Carleton University’s Career Competencies
• Assess specific Career Competencies using a skills inventory

Part 2: Articulating Career Competencies

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

• Review the definition of a Competency
• Complete a skills inventory and reflect on key differences
• Write accomplishment statements from their assignments
• Identify next steps in their career journey

Networking and LinkedIn

For: Undergraduate and graduate students

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

• Explain the benefits of networking
• Identify the stages in a networking timeline
• Identify different networking tools and strategies to expand networking opportunities
• Enhance LinkedIn profile using tips and tools gained from the workshop
• Define the purpose of an Informational Interview
• Review sample informational interview questions

Self-Exploration: Values, Interests and Skills

For: Undergraduate and graduate students

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

• Identify and assess interests, values, and skills
• Understand the relationship between self-knowledge and career development
• Review career planning resources related to their degree
