First Year undergraduate students must contact ECORSupport@carleton.ca. If you are a 2nd Year or above undergraduate student reaching out for any advising requests, we kindly ask you to read the FAQs before filling out the form below to help us better serve you. This form is not intended for mental health related concerns. If you are seeking support for mental health please consult the Useful Links section below.

How to Submit an Academic Advising Request

Step 1: Review Your Year of Study

Ensure that you are an undergraduate student in your 2nd Year or above before proceeding. All First Year engineering students must contact ECORSupport@carleton.ca instead of the department. If you are a 2nd Year or above undergraduate student, please continue to read the instructions below to proceed.

Step 2: Review the FAQs below to ensure you understand your request, your current academic standing (year status & year standing) and what to do before reaching out for program advising. Determine if you still need to contact your program advisor through this form.

Step 3: Select your Progression Tree below based on your program and catalog year. Download the file and follow the instructions on the file to fill and update the tree based on your academic progress.

Step 4: Fill out the form accurately and describe your request in detail so we can better support you.

Who should contact the department for academic advising?Current undergraduate students (ACSE, Civil Engineering & Environmental Engineering) in 2nd Year or above.

If you are a 1st Year student, please contact ECORSupport@carleton.ca. The department is unable to advise you at this stage of your degree program.
What things do Program Advisors help with?• Planning course progression if you fall “off pattern” due to not passing a course, summer courses, reduced course load etc.
• Helping to understand pre-requisite requirements. Understanding pre-requisite requirements
• Advising for waivers (if pre-requisite is missing) or overrides.
Special requests- Engineering
• Guidance on elective courses or how to focus on certain topics
• Academic continuation evaluation (ACE) information
What do Program Advisors not help with?• Any course that does not start with ACSE, CIVE, ENVE or ECOR (after 1st year)
• Advice on financial decisions or immigration
• Deferred examination approvals
• Petitions and appeals
What can I do before reaching out for help from a Program Advisor?• Use the Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED) planning tool for the coming academic terms
• Carefully consult your program progression tree to understand what courses are required and the pre-requisite requirements
How do I read the progression tree?• Broken down by year
• Solid arrows leading to a course means that you have to complete the course before you can register in that one (pre-requisite)
• Dashed arrows mean you need to take the course at least at the same time (concurrent)
• The small number of above a course means that you have to have that “year status” to take the course. Year standing and year status in engineering are different. *Find out what your standing and status are*
What can I expect as a response?• Advisors will likely have you fill out a form that helps to show your progression and plans for the coming academic year
• Once Advisors have a better idea of your issue, they may suggest a short meeting
What do I do when I meet with an Advisor?• Take detailed notes!
• Ask all your questions
• Email your plan to the advisor after the meeting to be sure you have it documented and to avoid future issues

Step 3: Attaching Progression Trees to your Academic Advising Form

If you have read the above information and are prepared to submit an academic advising request related to academic progress or building a registration timetable, please download the appropriate editable progression tree template below based on your catalog year and program.

*Your catalog year refers to your admit term (e.g. 202430 for Fall 2024 admitted students)*

Please follow the instructions found in the file on how to update your progression tree.

You will be asked to attach an updated version of the file with your current academic progress so that the respective program advisors can more efficiently review your case and provide you with the best advice.

Please note that your Year Status is NOT the same as your Year Standing. Find out what your status is by following this link: https://carleton.ca/engineering-design/current-students/undergrad-academic-support/understandingprereq/ (refer to FAQs above). Year Status in Engineering requires students to have successfully completed multiple courses in specific years of their program requirements and is catalog year specific. Year standing is a ranking used by the University and is based on the total number of credits completed that are counting towards degree requirements.
