Registration Instructions

When does registration open?

Refer to the Registrar’s Office Dates and Deadlines website to learn when registration will open on Carleton Central. Be sure to check for your specific time-ticket.
The Engineering Scheduler Tool be available as a planning tool only before registration opens. Check the welcome page of the Scheduler Tool to learn when EOR will open for override request submissions.

How do I register for courses?

Unlike in first year, upper-year B.Eng students are required to build their own timetables. For technical help with registration, check out the Carleton Central how-to-videos.

You can review these 10 Step for Engineering Registration to learn how to create an upper-year Engineering schedule.

To check which courses you should register for, refer to your program progression tree. If you need help planning your schedule, try using the Timetable Assistant on the Engineering Scheduler Tool.

Should I register for fall and winter courses at the same time?

When your time-ticket opens in the summer, you are eligible to register for both fall and winter courses. This is highly encouraged, as many winter courses fill up shortly after registration opens. However, changes to your timetable can be made up until the registration deadline of each term.

Please note that there are different payment deadlines for the fall and winter terms, so you are not required to pay for both terms at once.

How do I register for 4th-year project?

General information can be found here: 4th Year Project Registration. Additional information regarding project options is available from your Academic Department office. A list of Engineering Departments and contact information can be found here.

What is the difference between year standing and year status?

Carleton University assigns year standing according to the number of credits completed successfully which count towards the degree. In Bachelor of Engineering programs, we use year status, which is based on credits completed successfully as part of a specific year’s requirement.

You can review the year status requirements on our website (based on the catalog year noted on your audit). You can see how many credits of each year’s requirement you have completed by running your audit on Carleton Central.

Please note: “X year status” is often a prerequisite to upper-year engineering courses.

How do I know if I have [X] year status?

You can review the year status requirements on our website. You can see how many credits of each year’s requirement you have completed by running your audit on Carleton Central.

Course Selection

Which courses do I register in?

To check which courses you should add to your registration, refer to your program progression tree and your academic audit. Follow the progression tree that corresponds to your catalog year, which can be found at the top of your audit as XXXX30 (ex: 202230).

If you need help planning your schedule, try using the Timetable Assistant in the Engineering Scheduler Tool.

If you are off-pattern (i.e. not able to follow the schedule of your progression tree), you should meet with your academic advisor to create a registration plan to get you on track to graduate.

Can I take a course at another university?

In some cases, B.Eng students may be eligible to take a course at the University of Ottawa through the uOttawa Exchange program or at another university via a Letter of Permission. The course must be equivalent to one that is required for your Carleton B.Eng degree, and is subject to the approval of your academic advisor and the Associate Dean.

Refer to the uOttawa Exchange website and/or the Letter of Permission Guide for eligibility criteria and application information.

Can I take a course online?

B.Eng students are not permitted to take online courses, with the exception of the following:

Can I register in the class and its prerequisite at the same time?

Prerequisites are specific courses (sometimes with minimum grades) that must be met before you are able to register in a course. Course prerequisites are indicated with arrows on your program progression tree and are also published in the undergraduate calendar.

A concurrent prerequisite is a course that can be taken either before or in the same term with another course. Concurrent prerequisites are indicated with dotted arrows on your program progression tree and are identified on the undergraduate calendar course descriptions.

Can I take an elective that is not on the approved lists?

Lists of approved basic science electives (BSEs) and complimentary studies electives (CSEs) are updated for the fall/winter and summer terms and posted on our website before registration opens. Only courses included on these lists can count towards these degree requirements.

Acceptable 4th-year engineering electives are identified in the notes at the bottom-right of your program progression tree. Alternative engineering electives require written approval from your academic advisor and require sign off by the Associate Dean to ensure that Accreditation requirements are met.

Can I register in a course conflict?

No, engineering students are not permitted to register with conflicts in their schedules.  Online courses/sections with synchronous or combined delivery will remain scheduled and cannot have a schedule conflict. With synchronous and blended course delivery, students will need to be available during the assigned date/time for course activities as the instructor plans.

Override Requests

What is the Engineering Override Request (EOR)?

The Engineering Override Request system is a function of the Engineering Scheduler Tool that enables students to request override access to undergraduate engineering courses that they have been unsuccessful registering for themselves. If you aren’t able to register yourself for a course that you should be able to, submitting an EOR is how to request access to register.

Please note that only undergraduate courses offered by engineering departments can be requested using EOR (AERO, ASCE, CIVE, ECOR, ELEC, ENVE, MAAE, MECH, SREE, SYSC). Override access to any other course must be requested via the Registration Override Request on Carleton Central.

What is the difference between CROS and EOR?

The Course Registration Override System (CROS) and the Engineering Override Request Form (EOR) are registration tools that forward override requests to the appropriate department administrator for review.

CROS encompasses the Registration Override Request function of Carleton Central. Override access to non-engineering or graduate-level courses must be requested via the Registration Override Request on Carleton Central.

Override access to undergraduate courses offered by engineering departments must be requested using EOR (AERO, ASCE, CIVE, ECOR, ELEC, ENVE, MAAE, MECH, SREE, SYSC).

How do I submit a CROS registration override request?

If you are requesting override access to any non-engineering (math, science, the arts) course, you must submit a Registration Override Request on Carleton Central. Check out the how-to video for detailed instructions.

Please note that you must attempt to register in the course before you are able to submit a request.

How do I submit an EOR?

If you are requesting override access to any undergraduate engineering course you must submit an EOR via the Engineering Scheduler Tool. Detailed instructions for how to submit an EOR can be found here.

When does EOR open?

The Engineering Scheduler Tool will be available as a planning tool only before registration opens. Check the welcome page of the Scheduler Tool to learn when EOR will open for override request submissions.

How long will my EOR take to process?

The Academic Support Office strives to respond to all requests within 5 business days. However, we receive an extremely high volume of requests during peak registration periods which may result in longer response times. We will contact you as soon as your EOR has been reviewed and a decision has been made – you will receive a response to your request via email with directions on what to do next.

If you are waiting for a response to your EOR submission, ensure that it was submitted successfully; automatic confirmation emails are sent from EngAcadSupport@carleton.ca or ECORsupport@carleton.ca.

What does it mean if my EOR is pending?

Each EOR is individually reviewed and considered. In some cases, a request may be set to pending if we require additional documentation or if we are communicating with the department regarding space in the class.

If your request is pending, be sure to watch for an email from “EngAcadSupport” or “ECORSupport” for decision and important registration instructions.

Can I submit multiple EORs?

Students can submit only one EOR at a time. Therefore, we encourage students to attempt registration before submitting an EOR, to ensure that all necessary courses are included in the submitted request.

If you made a mistake or forgot to request a course, please contact us and we will cancel your request so that you can resubmit.

If my EOR is approved, am I registered in the course?

If your EOR is approved, you are granted override access, but you must register yourself in the course(s) before the override expiry date using Carleton Central.

You will receive an email from EngAcadSupport@carleton.ca or ECORsupport@carleton.ca with registration instructions. You must input the CRNs provided into the textboxes on the “Add/Drop Classes” page of Carleton Central, then click ‘Submit’ to register. Check your “Student Timetable” or academic audit on Carleton Central to ensure that you have successfully registered.
