The dash to the finish line for the Canada-Europe Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) has spurred a flurry of articles in the news media on the issue. One recent Toronto Star reporter asked CES’s Patrick Leblond about his opinion on recent negotiations. In the Article Professor Leblond said:
“The end is always the most difficult part because you keep all the hot issues, the most politically sensitive ones to the end. That’s where a lot of horse-trading and compromises get made. The ideal scenario is we conclude our deal with the Europeans. Then the Europeans say, ‘We did our deal with the Canadians. Let’s use that as a basis for the negotiations [with the U.S.]’.”
