Fractional Co-op Program
Carleton’s Co-op team is looking to partner with companies interested in testing a new, flexible way to work with our co-op students. We call it a fractional co-op (more details below).

Rationale
A fractional co-op addresses two of the more common challenges employers face relative to hiring co-ops: not enough work and not enough budget.
Concept
Students work on projects across different companies for specific time periods (rather than one full 16-week placement) to allow for cost sharing of skilled labor.
Work term structure
- Work term must be 12-16 weeks, paid at least minimum wage, fulltime (35 hours/ week), and related to the student’s program.
- One employer would be the Employer of Record (EOR) and pays the student’s salary for the duration of
the entire work term. This employer would also be responsible for applying for funding on the group’s behalf. - Flexible work plan (which employers/which weeks) should be agreed upon before the start date.
- Student has one main contact within the EOR throughout the work term. Considerations should be given to both technical and professional guidance throughout the work term.
Required Collaboration among Employers
- Alignment on work plan
- Job description creation and recruitment process
- Mechanism to transfer salary money to the EOR
- Applications and distribution for funding and tax credits
- Completion of the student’s mid-term and end of term evaluation
- Reviewing the student’s work term report (due near the end of their term)
