Welcome to the Co-op Program
You have met the academic requirements for the Co-op Program and are now ready to begin the process of preparing for your first co-op work term!
1. COOP 1000
- All students in the Co-op Program are required to successfully complete COOP 1000 two terms before their first Co-op work term. If you’re planning to begin your first Co-op placement in Summer 2026, you must complete COOP1000 in Fall 2025, ahead of your Winter 2026 job search.
- Register via Carleton Central in COOP 1000 section A for Fall 2025.
- COOP1000 is an online, zero-credit course that runs over 8 weeks and includes 7 modules focused on building essential employability skills. Topics include:
- Identifying and marketing your skills and achievements
- Writing effective resumés and cover letters
- Preparing for industry-specific interviews
- Planning and executing an independent job search
- Transitioning from university to the workplace, including topics such as professional ethics and workplace safety (e.g., professional ethics and workplace safety).
- COOP1000 will begin on September 4th.
- COOP1000 is a zero credit course and does not affect a student’s registration limit.
2. Co-op Regulations
- All Co-op regulations can be found in the Undergraduate Calendar. It is your responsibility to read these regulations and to contact the Co-op Office if you have any questions.
3. Co-op Fees
- Once you have registered in COOP1000, the first of four non-refundable Co-op administration fees will be charged to your account. While the fees do not guarantee you will secure a Co-op position, they provide you with access to career advising and all available resources and workshops, helping to maximize your chances of success.
- You will also be required to pay a work term fee for each work term you secure. If you are not able to secure a position in a given work term, the work term fee will not be charged.
- For more information about the fees associated with the program, please visit the Program Cost Page.
4. Continuation Requirements
- To be eligible to participate in the Co-op Program, you must be registered in a full-time course load during all study terms.
- Be advised that your academic audit will be reviewed several times a year in order to ensure that you are still meeting Co-op’s Continuation Requirements. If you do not meet the requirements, you will be notified and removed from the program. Students are encouraged to follow-up with the Co-op Office should they again become eligible in a future term.
5. International Co-op Students
- If you require a student visa to study at Carleton, you are considered an International Co-op Student. You will therefore need to secure a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and a Co-op Work Permit. In mid-fall, you will be provided a letter of support for your Co-op work permit application.
6. Withdrawal from Co-op
If you decide that the Co-op Program is not for you, please complete the “Request to Remove Co-op Option” form via mySuccess and we will ensure you do not receive any more communication from us. Learn how to access mySuccess forms here.
