The Centre for European Studies (CES) has been selected for two new grants from the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at Carleton University will receive a new grant of €100,000 ($146,000) for the years 2019-2022. The Centre’s thematic priority areas for the new grant period will be (1) policy cooperation between the EU and Canada in a changing transatlantic context; (2) economic and business relationships between the EU and Canada in implementing the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA); and (3) the populist challenge to democratic governance in Europe. The new grant will support academic lectures, workshops and publications; a visiting scholars program; research trips by graduate students; as well as outreach events and materials that target the policy and business community. The Centre of Excellence involves nineteen scholars from Carleton University and from the University of Ottawa; it is coordinated by CES Co-Director Achim Hurrelmann.
The Jean Monnet Project “EU Learning in Canadian High Schools” will receive a grant of €60,000 ($88,000) for the years 2019-2021. The main goals of this project are to promote a broader and deeper awareness and understanding of European integration and of the EU among high school students in Ottawa region. This project is highly innovative as it provides experiential learning through scenario simulation, graduate student conferences, teacher enrichment, debates and leveraging existing university-school interaction programming like the Enrichment Mini-Courses Program The Project is coordinated by CES Associate Director Crina Viju-Miljusevic.
CES is a Carleton University Research Centre housed in the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) and the Department of Political Science. The new grants will complement the Centre’s existing projects and initiatives, most notably the Jean Monnet Network on EU-Canada Relations, which is coordinated by CES Co-Director Joan DeBardeleben. The Jean Monnet Network is also co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
