EURUS MA Program Requirements
MA Program Requirements (5.0 credits)
Thesis, Research Essay, or Coursework Pathways
You may choose from three pathways: thesis, research essay (MRE), or (as of Fall 2027) coursework. Students usually choose their pathway by the winter term of year 1. See the graduate calendar for details.
Core Course- EURR 5001 Interdisciplinary Seminar
In the fall term of Year 1, you will take our team-taught core seminar EURR 5001 which provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the region.
Core Course – EURR 5010 Research Design and Methodology
In the winter term of Year 1, you will take EURR 5010 and learn about research design and methodology. Research essay/thesis students workshop proposals for their project. Coursework students write a research project
Regional Concentrations
You can choose from two concentrations: 1) European and European Union Studies or 2) Russia and Eurasian Studies. MRE and thesis students take 1.0 credit; coursework pathway students 2.0 credits in their concentration.
Elective Courses
Students may choose from a wide-range of elective courses offered by EURUS or by other departments. For course outlines/syllabi from past terms, see below.
Language Requirement
Students need to demonstrate proficiency in a regional language obtaining the equivalent of a 2000 level language course. Many students opt to do intensive language study in the region.
Detailed program requirements for the MA degree can be found in the Carleton University Graduate Calendar . Please refer to the calendar for all specific program requirements, including descriptions of specific courses. The summary below is intended for general information purposes only.
There are two concentrations in the MA degree.
- The Russian and Eurasian Studies concentration involves an interdisciplinary focus on the history, communist legacy and challenges facing countries in transition, with a geographic scope covering eastern and southeastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Caucasus and post-Soviet Central Asia.
- The European and European Union Studies concentration focuses on countries involved in the European Union and on the dynamics of European integration processes from an interdisciplinary perspective, including EU enlargement and relations of the EU with other states.
The EURUS degree includes the following components:
- 1.0 credit in Core courses, EURR 5001 and 5010 which are designed to enable students to develop a cumulative base of interdisciplinary knowledge, and to develop research proposals systematically with the support of their instructors and peers;
- 1.0 credit courses in their respective concentration (Russian and Eurasian; European and European Union). Coursework pathway students take 2.0 credits in their concentration.
- 1.0 credit in research essay EURR 5908 or 2.0 credit in thesis EURR 5909, which gives the student the opportunity to work with a faculty supervisor to develop a sustained research project,
- Remaining credits in EURUS electives (2.0 credits for coursework or research essay pathway; 1.0 credit for thesis pathway).
- A language requirement, equivalent to the 2000 level (second-year) courses at Carleton, to ensure that the student is able to work with original-language sources. While prior language study is recommended, students with no prior language experience should expect to take language courses in addition to the above requirements.
In addition, students who choose the co-op option need to work two work terms (paid employment) to receive the co-op designation on their transcript.
The program may be completed on a full-time or part-time basis, determined at the time of admission. Please note that only full-time students are eligible for admissions funding packages.
