EURUS MA Form B — Permission to Examine Research Essay or Thesis

This form is used by students when they are ready to submit their supervisor approved research essay or thesis to the department in preparation for examination. Students should have the examination copy of their research essay or thesis ready to upload with this form. For all thesis students and for research essay students who elect to have an oral examination, the form also is used to schedule an oral defence of the research project.

In most cases, research essays do not have an oral defence. Our graduate guidelines do provide options for students or members of the examination committee to request an oral defence. If you are not sure, please discuss the oral defence option with your supervisor.

In most cases, students should only submit their research essay or thesis for examination once their supervisor has confirmed that it is ready to proceed to this stage. While students may submit a research essay/thesis for examination without their supervisor’s approval, this is generally not recommended. Students who pursue this option should be sure to discuss their situation with the EURUS Director and Graduate Supervisor.

Name of Second Reader (THESIS ONLY)

This is normally the second reader that you indicated at the proposal stage who is a member of your MA thesis advisory committee.

Scheduling an Oral Defence

Thesis students are required to fill out this part of the form. Research Essay students who indicated that they are requesting an oral defence also should fill out this section. In some cases, students may have already arranged for a date and time with their committee. If that is the case, please indicate the date and time here.

Preferred Dates

Please indicate your availability and your preferences for when you would like to have your oral deference scheduled. Your oral defence will be scheduled taking into consideration your availability and preferences as well as the availability of members of the examination board.
