Healthy Workplace Strategy Renewal

Carleton University’s Healthy Workplace Strategic Plan, a plan that has had a positive and lasting impact on the Carleton community, is currently in the process of being renewed.

History of Healthy Workplace

Healthy Workplace encourages Carleton University faculty and staff to champion positive physical and mental health, build meaningful social connections, foster personal and collective resilience, explore opportunities for personal growth, and enjoy work-life balance.

Carleton University’s Healthy Workplace is an exciting program that is bringing workplace health to all Carleton faculty and staff. Since being established in 2009, Healthy Workplace has evolved to best support the needs of Carleton University’s faculty and staff and their understanding of what a “healthy workplace” means for this community. The program is based on exhaustive research on wellness and recognition practices throughout the university community. The Healthy Workplace Committee and the Healthy Workplace Champions, comprised of staff from all over campus, seek to make Carleton a healthy and enjoyable place to work.

Carleton University’s 2019 – 2022 Healthy Workplace Strategic Plan provided a holistic approach to supporting faculty and staff well-being and building a thriving workplace. This strategy incorporated mental health and wellness initiatives for the first time in recognition of the integral role mental health and wellness plays in impacting and influencing a healthy workplace.

Many accomplishments have occurred since the implementation of the 2019-2022 strategy. Simultaneously, many changes have occurred within the university, the workplace, the Carleton faculty and staff community and the world as a whole. Healthy Workplace is committed to continuous improvement in building a thriving, healthy workplace and we will continue our work in collaboration with our campus partners and members of our campus community.

Healthy Workplace Strategic Plan Renewal

The renewal of the Healthy Workplace Strategic Plan is underway and has been greatly informed by the Carleton University community and key stakeholders groups, in addition to Carleton’s Strategic Integrative Plan and other relevant campus-wide strategies and plans.

As a first step in the renewal process, a Healthy Workplace Strategy Task Force was struck to support this important work and to provide cross-campus representation.

As the renewal process began in late-2023, consulting members of the campus community was a top priority and played a critical role in shaping the next iteration of the strategic plan. Additionally, hearing directly from the Carleton community further supported Healthy Workplace in better aligning current and future programming and strategic goals to best meet and respond to the needs of the faculty and staff community.

With support from the Office of Quality Initiatives, the Healthy Workplace Strategy Task Force facilitated a number of focus groups, providing members of the faculty and staff community the opportunity to share their unique knowledge, insight and experiences. Additionally, the consultation process included a number of interviews with key Carleton stakeholders.

The 2024-2028 Healthy Workplace Strategic Plan is set to launch in Fall 2024.
