The Organizing Committee of the 15th Annual Graduate Student Heritage Conservation Symposium and the graduate School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies, in cooperation with Carleton University’s NSERC CREATE Heritage Engineering Program are pleased to announce our upcoming symposium for 2021 titled: Keeping Heritage Real: Authenticity in Conservation Practice. The symposium will be starting on Thursday, April 15th, 2021, on Zoom and will be recurring every Thursday for five weeks, over lunchtime. We are now accepting submissions.
The symposium seeks submissions from students within the disciplines of Heritage Conservation, Architecture, Engineering, History, Museology, Curatorial Studies, and related fields.
Submissions are encouraged to explore, but are not limited to, the following guiding questions:

How might authenticity be defined in a world of evolving cultural values?

How can heritage processes become more inclusive of marginalized communities?

How and when can values assessment be democratized?

What are possible productive relationships between authenticity and sustainability?

Can conflicting claims and interpretations of authenticity be reconciled?

How do notions of authenticity change at times of crisis or conflict?

How have evolving definitions of authenticity enabled conservation practice to engage with processes of collective memory?
We are open to various submissions appropriate for 15-minute Zoom presentations, including academic papers, multimedia presentations, case studies, design projects, etc. Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words by Friday, March 12, 2021 in English or French, accompanied by a title and a short biography of 50 words. Please include links to any relevant supplementary media.
