Undergraduate Programs

The Department of History offers a broad selection of undergraduate courses, ranging from Roman Antiquity to the present day. Students have an opportunity to take courses that focus on Africa, Asia, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and the United States. Many of our courses also cut across geographical boundaries by following a particular theme, the social history of alcohol, slavery, the history of sexuality, environmental history, the historical experience of women, digital history, and the development of big business.

History Honours BA / Concentration in Public History

Public History explores how the past is connected to the present and how it is represented and experienced in sites such as museums, archives, films, theatre performances, walking tours, monuments and memorials, historical novels, graphic novels, video games, family photograph albums, and digital platforms.

Combined Honours BA

The BA (Honours) adds a fourth year of advanced study during which students take seminars and conduct research under the direct supervision of a faculty member. The BA (Honours) degree provides students with the option of pursuing graduate work. The Honours program includes the option of completing a major research essay for credit, but this may only be undertaken with the permission of a faculty member willing to supervise the project.

Honours Co-op BA

The Cooperative Education Option allows the student to gain valuable practical experience in a work environment related to History. Students admitted to the Co-op Option must satisfy the normal requirements for graduation in the BA History (Honours) and three paid work terms, with each work term lasting four months in order to receive the co-op designation on their final transcript and diploma.
