John Nelson, is an executive coach and mentor who has managed student services and international education portfolios at three academic institutions in Ottawa. He has over 17 years of professional experience leading business development initiatives and events within the hospitality and higher education sectors; coaching and mentoring students, athletes, international education professionals, and new immigrants to Canada. He is currently an Ambassador with the Ottawa Board of Trade, a member of Kiwanis Ottawa, and a mentor with OCISO where he mentors and supports immigrants as they transition to the Canadian workforce. He is currently serving a three-year term as the staff representative on the Carleton University Board of Governors, is coaching with the Black Coaches Collective, and has actively supported the organizing team of the annual Carivibe festival since its inception in Ottawa 14 years ago.
John holds a Bachelor’s degree (BASc) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ottawa, a Master’s degree (MEng) in Technology Innovation Management from Carleton University, and an ACC credential from the International Coaching Federation (ICF). As an ICF Certified executive coach, he works with high potential entrepreneurs and professionals navigating change, and with high school and university students exploring academic and professional options. In his spare time, he enjoys tennis and volleyball, and paddles as a member of the Carleton Dragonboat team.
As Director of the Innovation Hub, John is responsible for the strategy, planning, and operations of a unit that provides a platform for entrepreneurship education, experiential learning, innovation, and new venture creation activities for the Carleton student community.
