The transition from high school to university can be difficult for many students. Our strategic impact group explored the wicked problem of graduation rates by looking at newly admitted students to determine how they could “Get the First Year Right”. With support from OIRP and various stakeholders across campus, we looked to determine those students that may be at risk of difficulties due to a lack of academic preparedness or gaps in skills, and ways to better prepare them to successfully navigate the transition to university.
By looking at the many student support services already available to students at Carleton and new research being conducted on and off-campus, we hope to guide students to appropriate academic pathways and support services that will address these gaps and ensure they are on a path toward graduation.
