The Pursuit of Gender Equity

Gender disparity surrounding the workplace and caregiving responsibilities is undisputed. The COVID-19 pandemic has served to highlight, and widen, these existing societal disparities: mounting evidence has pointed to the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women, among other marginalized groups. Women, particularly those that are mothering, appear to be taking on a larger burden for caring for others (children, older parents, etc.), and statistics suggest women are leaving the workforce in order to engage further in caregiving. While the pandemic will surely end, gender equity issues will likely continue to perpetuate and have a greater impact on our society, unless we engage as leaders in this conversation, and be catalysts for action and change at both the system and individual levels.

What are your roles and responsibilities? What are your lived experiences? Join Kim Hellemans, Chair, Department of Neuroscience and Adrian Chan, Professor, Systems and Computer Engineering on a discussion on gender and the workplace. They are particularly keen to ensure we have gender parity in our participants!

Change is uncomfortable. And change cannot happen if only half the people are present!
